The Benefits of Adventure Therapy on the Island of Hawaii

When The Ohana CEO Elliott Michael Smith visited Hawaii for the first time, he noticed something life-giving about its natural elements. He felt better, more clear-minded, and more energetic on the island, and he knew that being here could help others—particularly those suffering from substance use disorder.

At The Ohana, the island of Hawaii is a driving force behind our clients’ addiction recovery, offering opportunities for adventure therapy at every turn. Below, we’ll dive into the unique properties of our campus, as well as some of the life-changing adventures we provide for our clients off-campus.

Why Adventure Therapy?

Adventure therapy is a form of psychotherapy that combines nature, community, and exercise—all things in great supply here in Hawaii. The benefits of adventure therapy include:

You’ll practice a variety of coping mechanisms during activities that expose you to controlled stressful environments. You’ll then be able to carry these newly acquired strategies over into your daily life.

During some of our adventures, you may experience fear and a desire to quit. Alongside your peers, you’ll learn to act in the face of fear, highlighting your ability to show-up despite feeling scared.

You’ll practice leadership as well as taking direction from others during our activities. As you practice, you’ll build more trust in your ability to lead and learn to trust those around you.

Adventures On Campus

Our facility is in the heart of Kailua-Kona, a seaside town located on the west side of the Big Island. The residential treatment facility has 3,000 square feet of living space sitting on top of a five-acre campus. Outdoors, our Kalok Gardens grow hibiscus, bananas, avocados, jade, mangos, and mamaki tea, which grows nowhere else in the world. You can also enjoy our outdoor rain shower among the lemon trees, walk through more fruit trees throughout the property, visit our rain-fed pool, and more. You’re sure to find a favorite spot to call yours during your time with us.

Adventures Off Campus

The tropical climate allows for outdoor and water-based therapeutic activities in the most beautiful spots in Hawaii, adding a unique touch to the luxury detox experience. This includes kayaking, hiking, and snorkeling.

We also offer:

  • Equine therapy
  • Waterfalls in Hilo Town
  • Day trips to a black sand beach
  • Traditional Hawaiian luau
  • Yoga on the beach
  • Hikes through the Pololu Valley
  • Horseback riding in Waimea
  • Ziplining in Hamakua
  • Trips to a sacred volcano
  • Boat tour in Kona
  • Hawaiian chant on Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain in Hawaii

Why Should I Leave Home for Rehab?

If you’re considering traveling for rehab, you may be wondering: what are the benefits of distance? Is it better to stay in a familiar place, or to go outside my comfort zone for treatment?

The benefits of distance for alcohol rehab and drug rehab far outweigh the costs. On a practical level, separating yourself from the triggers of home can make a huge impact in your recovery. You’ll be surprised at how much a new location can change your state of mind.

At The Ohana, we combine the healing power of nature with adventure therapy to offer a unique and effective approach to addiction recovery. Once here, you’ll meet Meet the Ohana Team, a group of seasoned professionals who are here to guide you through recovery. You’ll be led through the Ohana Process, providing support and care every step of the way.

Don’t hesitate to take the first step towards a transformed life. Join us at The Ohana and experience the benefits of adventure therapy, surrounded by Hawaii’s life-giving natural beauty.
