Anxiety disorders occur when worry and feelings of anxiousness become excessive and impede on daily life. Anxiety disorders are the most common type of mental disorders and impact about 30% of adults at some point in their lives. there is not one treatment that can magically cure this disorder, there are ways to help individuals cope, and eventually heal from their anxiety.
What is anxiety disorder?Many people experience symptoms of stress in their life. Think back to a major exam or maybe a work presentation that you were nervous for, a healthy level of stress may have helped you prepare and perform better. Anxiety, on the other hand, occurs when levels of stress become excessive, and often out of proportion with the cause. For example, some people experience extreme anxiety of flying in an airplane, even though the chances of something going wrong are much lower than getting behind the wheel of a vehicle. Their anxiety may keep them from traveling or performing other tasks that are seemingly mundane. There are a variety anxiety disorders. The six main types are:
- Generalized anxiety disorder
- Panic disorder
- Social anxiety disorder
- Separation anxiety disorder
Symptoms of anxietyDifferent types of anxiety disorders involve a variety of symptoms. Some people may experience more physical symptoms that then lead to excessive worry, while for others its the other way around (excessive worry leads to physical symptoms). Below are just a few symptoms that could indicate an anxiety disorder.
- Trouble concentrating
- Trouble falling and/or staying asleep
- Excessive worry
- Fatigue easily
- Increased heart rate or heart palpitations
- Rapid breathing
