At The Ohana, we understand that our clients’ past trauma can have a major impact on their substance use. In fact, many of our clients have spent years using drugs and alcohol to cope with traumatic events. Here, our clinicians use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, among other modalities, to help our clients rapidly decrease the distress associated with traumatic memories, and ultimately find freedom.
At The Ohana, EMDR therapy is structured around eight phases designed to relax you into the process, scan your body, and help you return to equilibrium. A distinctive feature of EMDR therapy is its use of bilateral brain stimulation, usually in the form of guided eye movements or two hand-held buzzers, which vibrate one at a time. This bilateral stimulation is believed to facilitate the reprocessing of traumatic memories.
As clients work through and “neutralize” traumatic memories, they become less influenced by them and more able to make clear, healthy decisions. EMDR helps our clients understand some of the triggers they learn about in psychoeducation, and helps them limit poor behavioral choices stemming from trauma responses.
The Goal: To bring our clients back to a state of wellness, and help them understand each piece that makes up their addiction. Many of our clients have seen massive changes using EMDR therapy, and report significant reductions in symptoms after just a few sessions.
